Our experienced team of designers, technicians, joiners, metal workers, scenic artists, model and prop makers have worked together for over a decade to create and deliver bespoke and unique installation of interactive exhibits, scenic set works and models.
We excel in working collaboratively, both with clients and other contractors and genuinely love what we do from the creative development phase through to the client visits to our workshops in York to inspect works prior to installation. Quality is integral to our works, we confidently warranty all completed projects for 12 months as standard. Our reputation for creative design development, technically advanced build and the quality of our finished exhibits precedes us. Unusual Projects designs and manufactures exhibits entirely in-house, including physical, manual, electromechanical, hybrid, digital and tactile interactives.
The team at Unusual Projects work closely with our clients to understand the principles requiring interpretation and apply our experience to ensure that we deliver exhibits that enthral visitors of all ages. We strongly believe that the very best interactives are immediately engaging, intuitive to use and the take away message has to be clear and simple – learning through play is one of the most effective ways to learn.
Over the years, we have naturally built up a knowledge of materials, mechanisms and processes which we know work and will stand up to the heavy usage required in an interactive environment.

Our sculptors, model makers and prop makers all bring large amounts of creativity and hi-tech solutions to your project. Our team have decades of practical hands on experience to draw upon to deliver exceptional results. We really enjoy working collaboratively with you to match your model to your needs.
Our experience enables us to recommend the correct materials and approach for the models requirements. Some models are not accessible to visitors – this enables a more exact replica approach to be taken in terms of materials and build, others are direct hands on model, designed to be felt and experienced by visitor – these models require a much more robust approach whilst retaining the original key learning outcomes – is it the size, the feel, the smell that visitors want to experience?

Our team of scenic artists come from a vast range of backgrounds and have decades of combined experience creating immersive environments specifically for heritage and visitor attractions. Their experience enables us to work closely with our clients to recommend the best solutions for construction and materials to deliver the design vision within budget. Our integrated services mean the scenic team can call upon the technical knowledge of the design and engineering team for support and ensure the safety of your visitors.
We are a very creative team and, on all projects, prefer to be involved in the whole creative process. It is important for us to work closely with our clients to fully understand the aims and outcomes for each scenic intervention, some are interactive scenic set works – these require a higher level of robustness and safety testing in terms of structural integrity and material safety, others are display only enabling a more accurate approach in terms of materials and the aesthetic detail to be taken.
maintenance
The flexible maintenance services we offer to our clients help support the safety checks of internal teams and are not limited to exhibits we have designed and built. There is nothing worse than visiting an interactive exhibition to find the dreaded ‘out of order’ sign – we work with you to ensure your exhibits are looking great and working as well for your millionth visitor as they were for the first.
Our maintenance service is bespoke to each site as they are all so varied. It’s really important to us that our exhibits look and function as well as the day they were installed, post our 12 month warranty period. We also undertake maintenance and repairs of exhibits not designed or built by ourselves, it’s a little bit trickier but completely do-able.
Every maintenance visit is fully documented and followed up with a detailed report outlining all checks undertaken, any issues identified and our costed recommendations for repair so that our clients have a continuous recording system to demonstrate site compliance with regular safety maintenance checks.
