MEDIEVAL PERTH
CLIENT: FOUR COMMUNICATIONS
SCOPE: DESIGN, BUILD & INSTALL aN INTERACTIVE MODEL BASE
Unusual Projects were approached by Four Communications to produce a custom-made model of medieval Perth that could also act as a white canvas for a top-down projection.
The 2050 x 1170mm model shows city in approximately the year1440 and includes the dwellings, the old city walls, the castle, river, and wooden bridge.
Using historical information from many sources our talented modelmakers worked with the museum curator and set about interpreting this into a physical model that worked with the desired narrative to explain the key history moments and how Perth has organically grown since medieval times.
To achieve this, and be a good surface for projection, the model was made entirely in solid surface materials, with one end having a raised flat interactive projection area. The projection uses motion sensors to allow visitors to control the narrative.
Six key buildings (e.g. the Castle, the Church) were further enhanced with a higher level of shape and form and included laser etched details such as windows and doors.
“Our experience of working with Unusual Projects at Perth Museum was excellent. They were attentive to the requirements of a complex project which required integration with digital elements. Development was collaborative and productive, and the end product punctually delivered and perfectly executed. As far as our audiences are concerned, their model is one of the highlights of the new museum.”
